Student Wellness on the Pullman Campus

Student Wellness That Drives Student Success

For all students, every day.

In Student Affairs, we know student success begins with access to essential resources and a strong sense of belonging. When students’ basic needs are met, and they feel connected to campus, they are more likely to persist, graduate, and make meaningful contributions to their communities and society. This CougsGive, we invite the Coug community to invest in student wellness by supporting food security resources and access to recreation—two critical drivers of retention and student success.

Food Security Supports Persistence

Reliable access to nutritious food provides students with stability, focus, and peace of mind—key factors in academic persistence. A Washington Student Achievement Council survey, published in the spring of 2025, found nearly 44% of Washington university students report experiencing food insecurity, and the need at WSU Pullman continues to grow. By strengthening food access, we reduce barriers that can derail a student’s path to graduation.

WSU Pullman Food Pantries for Students

At WSU Pullman, demand continues to rise. This past fall semester alone, the campus food pantry recorded 21,020 visits, surpassing the total visits for the entire 2023 - 2024 academic year. Donations to the WSU Pullman Food Pantries for Students provide healthy food and hygiene items—helping students focus on learning, not survival.

Emergency Dining Dollars

Emergency Dining Dollars further support students facing food insecurity by providing discreet access to meals at campus dining locations. This program ensures students can enjoy a balanced meal, connect with peers, and maintain a vital sense of belonging.

Access to Recreation Builds Belonging

Food security and recreation work hand in hand to support retention. Participation in University Recreation programs fosters physical and mental well‑being while strengthening students’ connection to campus. Through fitness classes, intramurals, sport clubs, and outdoor recreation, students build community, manage stress, and deepen their sense of belonging. URec for All removes financial barriers so all students can access these engagement opportunities.

A Foundation for Retention and Graduation

Together, food security and recreation form a powerful retention strategy: meeting essential needs while encouraging connection, confidence, and community. Students who are nourished and engaged are more likely to stay, graduate, and succeed.

This CougsGive, your gift strengthens the foundation that keeps Cougs enrolled, supported, and thriving — For all students, every day.
