Mathematics and Statistics
Department of Mathematics and Statistics

Our department is committed to excellence in teaching at all levels. In addition to a broad range of courses leading to the B.S., M.S. or Ph.D. degree, we offer students experiences beyond the classroom; for example, students have the opportunity to work with a professor on research and present the results at a scientific conference, organize mathematics events for the department, attend a professional conference, or visit mathematicians in their workplaces. These opportunities, made possible through donor support, provide additional educational experiences and teach important work and life skills.

Our faculty are known for their fundamental research as well as their research that addresses issues of global concern. Faculty collaborate with other researchers throughout the university, at other universities, and in business, industry, and national labs.

This #CougsGive day we are asking for your support of The Department of Mathematics and Statistics Excellence Fund. This fund provides significant benefits to students by offering flexibility to address the most pressing needs and opportunities. Here are some key ways these funds can make a difference:

  1. Scholarships and Financial Aid: Unrestricted funds can be used to provide scholarships and financial aid to students, helping to reduce their financial burden and allowing them to focus more on their studies.
  2. Research Opportunities: These funds can support student research projects, enabling students to engage in meaningful academic work, gain valuable experience, and contribute to their field of study.
  3. Travel and Conference Attendance: Unrestricted funds can cover travel expenses for students to attend academic conferences, workshops, and other professional development opportunities, enhancing their learning and networking experiences.
  4. Guest Lectures and Workshops: The department can use these funds to invite guest speakers and organize workshops, providing students with access to diverse perspectives and expertise.
  5. Technology and Resources: Unrestricted funds can be allocated to upgrade technology and resources, such as library materials, software, and equipment, ensuring students have access to the best tools for their education.
  6. Emergency Aid: These funds can be used to provide emergency financial assistance to students facing unexpected challenges, helping them to stay on track with their education.
  7. Extracurricular Activities: Unrestricted funds can support extracurricular activities, such as math competitions, student organization social events, colloquia speakers,  and other events that enrich the student experience and foster a sense of community.

By contributing to our excellence fund donors enable the Department of Mathematics and Statistics to respond quickly and effectively to the evolving needs of students, ultimately enhancing their educational experience and success.
