The Department of Physics and Astronomy seeks to provide a learning atmosphere that fosters intellectual growth and quantitative reasoning. Through our innovative programs in physics and astronomy, we engage students in both teaching and research activities. The skills, knowledge, and ability for critical thinking our students attain empowers them to make a positive contribution through their work. In the process, we also lay a foundation for technological progress to advance our quality of life.
While the department conducts research in traditional areas of physics, we have enhanced our relatively small group by identifying three areas of research excellence: Astrophysics, Extreme Matter / Novel States of Matter, and Materials and Optics.
